I am coming to realize that my tranny is having some real troubles (tech link here). Here are the facts:
- In 2013 I replaced the clutch, tranny fluid (Redline MT-90), and rear tranny seal (I replaced the seal only as preventative measure because it was easy to do and recommended with the tranny out).
- Before replacing the rear tranny seal it didn’t leak. Subsequent to replacing it leaked! GRrrrr!
- In 2014-2015 I replaced the tranny fluid (Redline MT-90) and rear tranny seal again… while the whole engine was out for turbo replacement.
- To ensure a good seal I made sure there were no groves on the driveshaft and RTVed the seal OD for good measure.
- Subsequently the rear seal leaked again!! Wtf?!
- Since reinstalling the engine I’ve noticed a rattle in 1st and 2nd gear around 1,500 rpm on acceleration only.
- Yesterday I put the Z on jack stands to replicate the rattle while stationary.
- At steady state the rattle is actually more like a full-on vibration which can easily be felt through the whole car frame.
- I won’t go into the details here but Jim --another great car guy—and I came to the same conclusion that it’s very likely a problem internal to the transmission itself.
- I'll plan to buy a mechanic's stethoscope to confirm (any recommendations on which one) but seems almost a forgone conclusion that I've got to pull the tranny... again!
ttsmokin has also realized transmission problems after filling with MT-90 so now I'm a little worried that there might be some connection between tranny troubles and MT-90. Hopefully this is simply a red herring but that's why I'm wondering how many folks are running Redline MT-90 transmission fluid problem free and for how long? Have you ever come across a problem like this?
